As part of project Optimize, a five-year human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine demonstration project is under way in Uganda and three other countries to demonstrate how existing health systems can be adapted to successfully provide HPV vaccine to young adolescent girls. HPV vaccine is a strong candidate for storage and transport in a controlled temperature chain at temperatures higher than the standard 2º to 8ºC cold chain storage.

This report, the first in the Roll Back Malaria Progress & Impact Series, confirms that investment in malaria control is rapidly saving lives and reaping far-reaching benefits for countries. The report demonstrates that without sustained and predictable long-term funding, the significant contribution of malaria control toward achievement of the five Millennium Development Goals that are closely tied to malaria control, as well as progress toward achieving the 2010 Abuja target of universal intervention coverage, could be reversed.

The purpose of this cost analysis study conducted at six health facilites was to determine the costs of replacing the existing delivery method with oxytocin in Uniject® for the prevention of postpartum hemorrhage. This study complements a larger study on acceptability and feasibility, Pilot Introduction of Oxytocin in Uniject® During Active Management of the Third Stage of Labor (AMTSL) at the Institutional Level in Guatemala.

This report shares the results of a pilot introduction of oxytocin in the Uniject® device for use with active management of the third stage of labor that was conducted at the institutional level in Guatemala in 2009. Results include details on the feasibility of introducing oxytocin in Uniject in this context as well as the acceptability of this technology among health care providers and facility managers.
