Diagnostics for Infectious Diseases

PATH Diagnostics collaborates with partners to improve the availability and access to diagnostic resources and tools for case management, elimination, and surveillance of malaria and other infectious diseases. This includes:

Tools and resources to support the management, elimination, and surveillance of malaria

• Collaborating with partners to develop, evaluate, and commercialize rapid, highly sensitive tests to detect low-density malaria infections.
• Collaborating with partners to develop, evaluate and commercialize point-of-care tests for glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency (G6PD) to guide the treatment of patients with Plasmodium vivax malaria.
• Providing biological materials and market and technology landscaping assistance to test developers to support the development and implementation of diagnostic testing.
• Providing free access to a G6PD specimen repository, PATH-developed controls, and a proficiency panel to test developers to support the development and implementation of diagnostic testing.
• Collaborating with partners to develop G6PD and malaria reagents for use in the development of malaria diagnostics.
• Facilitating a community-based collaboration to advance the introduction and scale-up of G6PD diagnostics in support of safe access to radical cure treatment for Plasmodium vivax malaria through operations research.
• Tools and protocols for the development and commercialization of new diagnostics to support malaria elimination and control.

Supporting detection and decision-making for onchocerciasis and lymphatic filariasis

• Conducting an analysis on diagnostic gaps for lymphatic filariasis and developing and commercializing three highly sensitive, highly specific rapid diagnostic tests to determine exposure to post-kala-azar dermal leishmaniasis that support decision-making on mass drug administration.
• Collaborating to develop a prototype multi-antigen serology rapid test for detecting evidence of Onchocerca volvulus infection.
• Creating quality assurance and quality control materials to support rapid diagnostic tests for onchocerciasis and lymphatic filariasis serology.
