  2. In sub-Saharan Africa, malaria in pregnancy continues to contribute to high maternal and newborn morbidity and mortality. In Kisumu, Kenya, PATH developed a two-phased approach to increase coverage of malaria in pregnancy prevention activities and strengthen antenatal care. This report details the activities and outcomes of the pilot project and offers recommendations for next steps. One approach to the problem is intermittent preventive treatment of malaria in pregnancy with sulfadoxine pyrimethamine, an antimalarial safe for use in pregnancy.
