  3. In Zambia, the continued prevalence of congenital syphilis is a risk to newborns, and can cause premature birth, low birth weight, birth defects, and even newborn death. When pregnant women are tested for syphilis, however, service providers can treat the infection and prevent transmission to newborns. PATH is focusing advocacy efforts on the scale-up of a newly available rapid syphilis test, which offers a low-cost, easy-to-use screening option.
