This brief, published by PATH in collaboration with the Solar Electric Light Fund (SELF), annotates a defensive publication that placed three prototype energy harvesting controls (EHCs) within the public domain. Lessons learned include confirmation that with the addition of an EHC solar-direct drive refrigerators can safely provide surplus electricity to power secondary electrical loads. This report presents the methods and findings from laboratory testing of two energy harvesting control (EHC) prototypes with three different Performance, Quality and Safety prequalified solar direct–drive refrigerators from three different manufacturers. The primary goals of the testing were to inform potential specifications for EHCs, test the specific prototypes, and collect data to answer a number of questions raised by the possible introduction of EHCs to vaccine cold chain systems.

Soil-transmitted helminths (STH) are parasitic intestinal worms that are controlled with mass drug administration in at-risk populations. The work described in this poster aims to develop a rapid, field-deployable, non-instrumented, magnetic bead-based protocol to extract STH egg DNA in stool, using Ascaris suum as model species, for use as a companion tool to recombinase polymerase amplification (RPA)-based diagnostics for STH.
