This report summarizes the results of PATH’s field evaluation of Sure Chill’s long-term passive device for the use of cold storage of vaccines in Senegal and provides important feedback in terms of thermal performance, end-user inputs, and perceptions at the Ministry of Health of the potential impact of the device on vaccine storage and availability in Senegal.

At PATH, we “measure what matters" by emphasizing a practical, nimble, and actionable measurement-based approach to guide decision-making. We evaluate multiple factors at various levels of the organization and across the value chain, measuring what is useful and adapting our work based on those learnings.

This brief, published by PATH in collaboration with the Solar Electric Light Fund (SELF), annotates a defensive publication that placed three prototype energy harvesting controls (EHCs) within the public domain. Lessons learned include confirmation that with the addition of an EHC solar-direct drive refrigerators can safely provide surplus electricity to power secondary electrical loads. This report presents the methods and findings from laboratory testing of two energy harvesting control (EHC) prototypes with three different Performance, Quality and Safety prequalified solar direct–drive refrigerators from three different manufacturers. The primary goals of the testing were to inform potential specifications for EHCs, test the specific prototypes, and collect data to answer a number of questions raised by the possible introduction of EHCs to vaccine cold chain systems.
