  5. In 2008, the South African National Department of Social Development initiated the Thogomelo project with the support of the United States Agency for International Development. PATH and Mott MacDonald Development South Africa (MM) (previously known as Health and Development Africa) managed the project, whose fundamental goal is to strengthen South Africa’s capacity to care for its community caregivers (CCGs) and to protect vulnerable children. The Thogomelo project aims to ensure the emotional well-being of CCGs, who form the backbone of community-based support to vulnerable children and others in need of care.
