PATH was founded in 1977 with a simple idea: innovation should improve health for the people who need it most. Nearly 50 years later, that idea still guides our work.
Today, PATH works with countries, communities, health workers, researchers, governments, and partners around the world to develop and deliver health innovations—from vaccines and diagnostics to stronger health systems and more accessible care.
But many people still ask an understandable question: What does PATH stand for?
The answer is both straightforward and a little complicated. Early on, PATH stood for Program for Appropriate Technology in Health.
The name reflected a belief that technology could help solve some of the world's most pressing health challenges—if it was practical, affordable, and designed for the people who would use it.
Over time, our work expanded. We developed new health technologies, strengthened health systems, generated evidence, forged partnerships, and supported countries in bringing innovations to scale. As the organization grew, the original acronym no longer captured the full breadth of our work.
Today, we simply go by PATH.
While the acronym remains part of our history, PATH is no longer used as a shortened form of our original name. Instead, it has become the name of the organization itself—recognized around the world for advancing health innovations with and for the people who need them most.
The spirit behind the original name remains remarkably relevant. We still believe innovation should be practical. We still believe solutions should be shaped by the needs of the people they serve. And we still believe that scientific advances only matter if they improve people's lives.
That belief has guided PATH's work for nearly five decades—from expanding access to lifesaving vaccines and diagnostics to strengthening health systems and supporting countries as they build healthier futures.
Global health continues to change. New threats and challenges emerge. New technologies become possible.
But the goal remains the same: turning breakthroughs into better health for millions. That is what PATH stands for.
