Malaria terms
PATH recommends certain styling conventions for Plasmodium genes, proteins, mutations, and codon positions.
Conventions for styling Plasmodium genes, proteins, mutations, and codon positions vary across journals and publications. If a document follows an established author or journal style, follow that style consistently. If no established style is available, PATH recommends the following.
Gene abbreviations
-
For gene abbreviations, PATH recommends using all lowercase and italics. For example, abbreviate the Plasmodium falciparum chloroquine resistance transporter gene as pfcrt.
Protein abbreviations
-
For protein abbreviations, use all uppercase letters (except for the species abbreviation—e.g., “f” for falciparum) and roman type (no italics). For example, abbreviate the Plasmodium falciparum chloroquine resistance transporter protein as PfCRT.
Mutations
-
For mutations, use roman type and all uppercase letters (e.g., N86Y and Y184F mutations).
Codon positions
-
For codon positions, use lowercase “codon” followed by a space and the number (e.g., codon 86 and codon 184).
