Mozambique
Championing locally led solutions for national health impact.
Since 2012, PATH has partnered with the government of Mozambique to strengthen primary health care and expand access to essential services. By building trusted local relationships, fostering collaboration, and applying deep technical expertise, PATH supports the development of sustainable systems that respond to evolving health challenges.

Advancing primary health care
In Mozambique, PATH is advancing universal health coverage by integrating innovative, cost-effective solutions into PHC systems. By working with government stakeholders, PATH strengthens women’s and children’s health, nutrition, and development; community health systems; diabetes and hypertension care; and policy development and implementation.
Scaling health innovations
PATH turns promising ideas into impactful solutions. We pilot and scale health innovations through evidence-driven research and development, while prioritizing learning, adaptation, and collaboration to accelerate their uptake.
Leveraging digital innovation
PATH leverages digital innovation to enhance the performance and resilience of Mozambique’s health system. We support the Ministry of Health in designing user-centered digital tools to improve data use, coordination, and service delivery across public, private, and community health subsystems.
PATH works with Mozambique’s Ministry of Health to make health care more accessible and effective. Since 2023, PATH has supported the operationalization of the Community Health Subsystem Strategy, improving coordination, planning, and budgeting across government, partners, and donors. Through the Access Collaborative project, PATH expanded access to DMPA-SC and self-injection, trained health workers, strengthened supply chains and data systems, and enabled more than 115,000 family planning consultations in Maputo province. From 2008 to 2019, PATH led global nutrition efforts through the maternal and child health integrated program, reaching nearly 3 million children under five with malnutrition prevention and treatment solutions. Additionally, PATH has previously led national efforts to integrate Early Childhood Development into health services, providing training tools and monitoring systems. As a result, all well baby and sick child consultations in 1,600 public health facilities are now monitored and record the child’s health status.
PATH expands care support to improve the quality of life and health outcomes for people living with chronic diseases. Through a human-centered design pilot project, PATH led the distribution of Diabetes CarePaks to improve access to essential supplies and support behavior change for better glycemic control. This work resulted in 80% of participants reporting improved average blood sugar levels. The work in NCDs also included an initiative to strengthen primary health care capacity for NCD management, leading to a 32% increase in health workers’ knowledge of diabetes and hypertension screening and management.
PATH leverages digital innovation to improve the performance and resilience of Mozambique’s health system. Working with the Ministry of Health, PATH designs interoperable, user-centered tools that strengthen data use, coordination, and service delivery across public, private, and community subsystems. PATH is also scaling up the CommCare-based upSCALE mobile app for community health workers, enabling integrated case management of childhood illness and community-level data capture.
PATH pilots and scales health innovations through evidence-driven research and development, turning promising ideas into impactful solutions. In Mozambique, we have led the introduction and scale-up of the malaria vaccine, evaluated dual-active-ingredient insecticide-treated nets, and monitored initiatives supporting gender integration and human-centered design in immunization programs. Our work has also included health economic studies to guide decision-makers on vaccine introductions and product shifts.
In partnership with Mozambique’s Ministry of Health, PATH is advancing the integration of climate and health to strengthen the country’s National Health Adaptation Plan and resilience strategies. Through the Global Institute for Disease Elimination (GLIDE), PATH conducted research on how climate data is shared and applied to inform infectious disease control. Building on this foundation, PATH has continued collaborating with the Ministry of Health to shape the National Health Adaptation Plan and embed climate considerations into the Health Sector Strategic Plan 2025–2034.
