mOPV2 Vial Accountability: Designing simple, physical solutions to reduce vaccine vial loss

We risk spreading type 2 poliovirus if all mOPV2 vaccine vials are not properly distributed, handled, and deactivated. Vials have gone missing at all levels of the supply chain.

Through a comprehensive, ten-month user-centered design process, PATH developed three simple tools to reduce mOPV2 vial loss:

  • Sectioned vial bags to protect vials and improve vial management and tracking.
  • Locking droppers that increase visibility and recognition of mOPV2 while deterring theft.
  • Counting trays for easing the user burden of counting thousands of vials and maintaining accountability through a complex reverse supply chain.
