PATH at the Grand Challenges Annual Meeting
October 8-11, 2023
Dakar, Senegal
Under the theme "Science Saves Lives", the Grand Challenges Annual Meeting celebrates its 20th anniversary this year in Dakar. More than just an event, this meeting, supported by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and its partners, is a platform for strengthening and launching partnerships to push the frontiers of science and innovation to save and improve lives. Over four days, PATH will discuss how collaborations, scientists and R&D leaders can accelerate innovation for greater impact.
PATH representatives from eight country offices attended the first-ever International Conference on Primary Health Care (ICPHC) hosted by the Ethiopian Ministry of Health, International Institute for Primary Health Care – Ethiopia, and Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.
The Women Deliver Conference brought together more than 6,000 advocates, leaders, and changemakers from diverse fields worldwide to advance gender equality, sexual and reproductive health and rights, and the wellbeing of girls and women. PATH hosted and participated in various events at Women Deliver, and our exhibition booth was an opportunity to share how our organization is actively working towards health equity and universal health coverage.
At the 15th International Health Economics Association (IHEA) World Congress, PATH presented findings from recent human papillomavirus (HPV), respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and malaria vaccine health economics projects and exchanged learnings with peers and partners. The IHEA Congress is a global forum for health economists to engage around the latest methodological developments, present recent research findings, and explore the implications of this research for health policy and practice.
PATH acted as secretariat of the 3rd National Forum on Immunization and Polio Eradication, held in Kinshasa in the presence of the President of the Republic and 350 guests. The Kinshasa Declaration, signed in 2019 at the first National Forum, laid a solid foundation for achieving universal health coverage in the Central African country. The authorities remain committed to increasing and disbursing an immunization budget line to cover the costs of traditional vaccines, to meeting co-financing needs for new vaccines, and to maintaining free immunization for children.
PATH delegates hosted various side-events on digital health, NCDs, and UHC at the 76th World Health Assembly.
PATH had the honor to host this unique, bi-annual international forum in Seattle for the first time. 300 attendees were able to participate in sessions that took a deep look at technical research from global leaders in the field, and get fresh perspectives and new data from up-and-coming experts working in microneedle research and development.
The first biennial International Maternal Newborn Health Conference (IMNHC), organized by AlignMNH and in partnership with the maternal and newborn health community, was held this May and will be held every two years to maintain global progress towards improving maternal and newborn health.

At the 35th International Papillomavirus Conference (IPVC), PATH presented new findings from recent human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine projects, exchanged learnings with partners, and shared more about our efforts to accelerate HPV vaccine research and delivery.
Digital health can play a pivotal role in accelerating delivery to the last mile and achieving Universal Health Coverage. Organized under the aegis of the Think 20 engagements and designed to serve as curtain-raiser to the second G20 Health Working Group (HWG) meeting, PATH, in partnership with Observer Research Foundation and Digital Square, organized a thought leadership event to discuss what it takes to develop ‘A Global Digital Health Framework for Connected Healthcare’ on April 13, in New Delhi. The event brought together experts from diverse sectors and organizations.
PATH held a webinar on the opportunities and challenges of malaria vaccines over the next 5 years. The webinar explored key challenges to vaccine development and access—financial, scientific, and delivery—with perspectives offered by experts in their respective fields.
PATH joined Africa’s top policymakers, researchers, and health workers at the 5th Africa Health Agenda International Conference to reflect on progress, assess gaps, and identify necessary next steps toward developing a sustainable manufacturing ecosystem.
In this PATH Live Forum, we gained insight into creating an equitable, sustainable, and beneficial environment for connected diagnostics in global health. We also examined the hurdles global and local health leaders face when attempting to scale up connected diagnostics systems.
This PATH Live Forum examined the new approaches and tools for universal health coverage, currently being implemented by PATH and partners. Speakers also highlighted the latest in integrated service delivery, epidemic preparedness, telemedicine, and other people-centered approaches that create continuity and stability for health care workers and the communities that depend on them.
On the occasion of World Health Summit 2022 in Berlin, PATH, Allies Improving PHC, Matahri, and Resolve to Save Lives hosted a breakfast reception on Sunday, October 16th focused on advancing and advocating for integrated primary health care and pandemic preparedness and response as part of a 3-in-1 investment to improve universal health coverage, increase health and wellbeing and ensure resilience to future health threats.
Co-hosted by Foreign Policy and The African Union, this event held on the sidelines of the 77th UN General Assembly brought together experts to discuss what it will take to expand local manufacturing and strengthen health systems infrastructure across Africa.
At the 6th International Conference on Family Planning (ICFP), PATH exchanged learnings and showcased our commitment to health equity by supporting the delivery of integrated family planning and primary health care services, ensuring that client needs and preferences shape health care systems and technologies.
During the Union World Conference on Lung Health 2022, PATH showcased our continued commitment to advancing TB care through patient-centered innovations and systems-level advancements.
Held in Seattle, Washington, the annual meeting of the American Society of Tropical Medicine & Hygiene returned to an in-person format for the first time in three years and provided an opportunity to share PATH's wide breadth of malaria control and elimination efforts.
As the world continues to respond to and build back from COVID-19, PATH joined world leaders in New York at the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly to reflect on pandemic response to date and commit to building back and building better health systems to withstand future health crises.
During the 24th International AIDS Conference in Montreal, Canada, PATH showcased our continued commitment to health equity by supporting communities to lead the delivery of integrated HIV and primary health care services and ensuring client needs and preferences shape health care models and technologies.
