In October 2023, Kenya witnessed an unprecedented political moment and a sign of commitment towards achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC), when President William Ruto signed into law a series of bills aimed at strengthening the legal basis for health financing and health service provision through strong primary health care systems.These include:The Primary Health Care Act, 2023The Social Health Insurance Act, 2023The Facility Improvement Financing Act, 2023The Digital Health Act, 2023These laws are aimed at reducing disparities in health outcomes and promoting a healthier society by ensuring that all citizens have access to essential health care services in an equitable manner, regardless of their socioeconomic status, gender, ethnicity, or geographical location.This brief provides a summary of the key provisions of these laws, shining a light on commitments by government to improving health policy and financing environment to deliver health for all.

  2. Contraceptive methods and HIV prevention methods are largely delivered by separate health care providers at separate sites or units of health facilities. Given that many young women want to prevent both pregnancy and HIV, integrated service delivery has the potential to offer more holistic, client-centered, and convenient care.This video features PATH's HIV Prevention and Family Planning Integration project in Uganda (2022–2023), which engaged young women and health workers in human-centered design to strengthen the integration of HIV prevention with family planning services. The team worked with a local technical advisory group and youth themselves to co-create models of integrated service delivery and assess their feasibility, scalability, and acceptability.

In collaboration with the Uganda Ministry of Health, PATH is leading the Private Sector Family Planning project (2023–2026) to strengthen the private sector market for family planning, paving the way for introduction of more contraceptive methods in commercial outlets, providing clients more options for where and how to access methods of their choice.

  4. Africa’s pharmaceutical industry has undergone tremendous growth in all sectors over the years. This growth can be attributed to improvements in infrastructure, health care capacity, and business environment.The COVID-19 pandemic, however, brought to light the critical need for a more structured, robust, and resilient manufacturing sector for the continent. The industry was pushed by crisis to pick up the pace at establishing harmony within its different sectors, ensuring that they largely serve communities within Africa, and reduce over-reliance on pharmaceutical imports.This crisis also prompted increased political support for local medical products manufacturing, leading to a substantial expansion of African pharmaceutical manufacturing.

In Satara, PATH is applying a human-centered design (HCD) approach to redesign the health care system by removing barriers that hinder the utilization of primary health care services, both from the perspective of demand and supply.Our HCD approach includes:Behavioral barrier assessment: We delve into the behavioral dynamics affecting the utilization of PHC services and redesign care-seekers' pathways to facilitate better access and engagement.Redesigning PHC services for women: Our efforts are directed towards restructuring PHC services to minimize the number of touch points required for women to access care, thereby facilitating early detection of health conditions among women.Culturally appropriate community-centered solutions: We facilitated the formation of patient support groups tailored to the cultural context, aimed at improving medical treatment adherence for chronic conditions and enhancing awareness about health conditions within the community.
