This fact sheet describes how PATH and the World Health Organization have collaborated for more than three decades to improve global health. Highlights have included developing and introducing vaccines and health technologies, creating evidence-based policies, supporting improvements in reproductive health, and building regulatory capacity in Africa.

This report presents the results and lessons learned in a collaborative effort between the Guatemala Ministry of Public Health and Social Assistance (MSPAS), the Pan American Health Organization, and project Optimize. The demonstration project attempted to respond to the challenge of introducing new vaccines in Guatemala by implementing an information system for managing individual vaccination records and logistics. If a highly virulent pandemic strain were to emerge in today’s interconnected world, influenza has the potential to kill millions of people, especially in developing countries with limited to no resources for pandemic planning, preparedness, and outbreak response. PATH's work in developing thermostable influenza vaccines holds promise for extending product shelf life and easing logistics during introduction and rapid deployment to hard-to-reach populations—markedly improving developing-country preparedness and ability to contain the virus at its point of origin.
