Following the endorsement of the African Union (AU) Model Law on Medical Products Regulation in January 2016, regional legal frameworks and national laws must be revised to reflect Model Law provisions and support regulatory harmonization. Regional economic communities and member states have an important role to play in the creation of roadmaps and plans of action at the regional and national levels, which will be critical in the domestication of the AU model law.

Moving the Needle provides updates from PATH’s Center for Vaccine Innovation and Access (CVIA) on its vaccine development efforts, as well as related supporting work, such as developing human challenge models, building capacity of developing-country vaccine manufacturers, and evaluating new adjuvants and other novel vaccine technologies. It includes updates on our progress, partnerships, and specific activities. This is one of two newsletters published by CVIA. Immunization Matters covers CVIA’s vaccine uptake and access work.

Syphilis remains a serious health threat for pregnant women and newborns, though elimination of mother-to-child transmission (EMTCT) of syphilis is within reach. This paper, focusing on Nigeria, Zambia, and India, provides policy recommendations to strengthen commitment to EMTCT of syphilis and advance solutions that expand access to high-quality services.
