Neglected tropical diseases
We envision a world where country leaders and partners have the tools, evidence, financial capacity, human resources, and political will to control and eliminate neglected tropical diseases.
Project overview
An estimated 1.6 billion people globally are at risk of neglected tropical diseases (NTDs), a group of parasitic, viral, bacterial, fungal, and non-communicable diseases that disproportionally affect impoverished communities, with devastating health, economic, and social impacts. The World Health Organization (WHO) includes 21 NTDs in its 2030 road map to prevent, control, eliminate, or eradicate disease.
Despite the significant impacts of NTDs on communities, limited resources are available to fight these preventable and treatable diseases, and they receive relatively less attention in the global health agenda compared to other health challenges.
PATH partners with ministries of health to support the development of resilient health systems by generating evidence to inform policy, strengthen the capacity of health care workers, and increase coverage of proven health interventions against lymphatic filariasis (LF), onchocerciasis, visceral leishmaniasis (VL), acute encephalitis syndrome (AES), chikungunya, dengue, zika, and other neglected diseases.
Our work is rooted in deep technical expertise, ranging from strengthening surveillance systems, expanding access to new and existing tools, advancing vector control, improving diagnostics, and developing, evaluating, and scaling digital platforms to inform decision-making and monitor impact.
Focus areas
Surveillance
We partner with countries and organizations to support the development of high-quality surveillance systems for NTDs with a focus on integration for sustainability.
Vector control
We develop, introduce, evaluate, and scale innovative vector control tools and approaches that make control and elimination of vector borne NTDs more efficient, accessible, and affordable.
Diagnostics and treatment
PATH partners with national and state governments to provide programmatic support for elimination through mass drug administration, morbidity management and disability prevention, monitoring and evaluation (M&E), data quality improvements, and data-driven decision-making.
Digital and data
PATH provides data and modeling expertise to support decision-making within ministries of health to optimize implementation of NTD control and elimination efforts.
