Optimizing digital health
PATH transforms health care delivery in South Africa by strengthening digital systems, optimizing data use, and scaling innovative technologies that support more timely, coordinated, and effective care.

Innovating for better health
PATH advances science and technology to improve the health and well‑being of women, mothers, and newborns by developing, introducing, and scaling lifesaving reproductive and maternal health solutions.
As a strategic partner of South Africa’s Ministry of Health, PATH is supporting the development and strengthening of health technologies and data systems to improve care delivery across South Africa’s provinces. This has included the comprehensive assessment of the Health Patient Registration System and its Electronic Medical Record for TB and HIV modules, and the development of a digital platform for TB treatment adherence through the establishment of smart medication pickup points.
In partnership with various partners in South Africa, PATH develops and introduces lifesaving technologies and evidence-based practices to reduce preventable maternal and newborn deaths. This work includes our partnership with South African manufacturer Sinapi Biomedical in the development of the Ellavi Uterine Balloon Tamponade to manage severe postpartum hemorrhage. More broadly, PATH's maternal and newborn health work spans the introduction of lifesaving technologies, including newborn resuscitation equipment and medication; the adoption of comprehensive and integrated elimination programs for transmission of HIV, syphilis, and hepatitis B virus and the increase of the knowledge, abilities, and psychosocial well-being of community caregivers who care for children affected by HIV/AIDS.
From conducting studies on the delivery of HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis among women and health care providers to developing innovative HIV prevention products, PATH is advancing innovations in reproductive health, HIV prevention, and comprehensive care solutions designed with and for women. Through the Microbicide R&D to Advance HIV Prevention Technologies through Responsive Innovation and eXcellence (MATRIX) project, PATH worked with three major South African research institutions—the Aurum Institute, Centre for the AIDS Programme of Research in South Africa, and Wits Reproductive Health and HIV Institute—to develop innovative HIV prevention products.
In South Africa, PATH is driving breakthrough technologies and comprehensive health solutions through partnerships that strengthen local innovation capacity. Through the Global Health Innovation Accelerator, in collaboration with the South African Medical Research Council, PATH helped advance projects such as Umbiflow—a low-cost Doppler ultrasound device that reduces stillbirths—and Iyeza Health, a delivery service that brings lifesaving prescriptions directly to patients’ homes.
Through the Center for Advocacy and Policy, PATH advances efforts to influence health policy, strengthen regulatory frameworks, and mobilize resources to strengthen South Africa’s health system. Working in partnership with civil society, these advocacy initiatives also track implementation and hold stakeholders accountable, driving greater transparency and public engagement. As a result, South Africa adopted its National Policy on Science, Technology and Innovation, which prioritizes health research and development, and contributed to the legislation that established the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA).
PATH works with partners and the government to strengthen domestic manufacturing capabilities to ensure locally driven solutions. Through the Boosting Local Supply Security Initiative, PATH developed investment cases for various local South African diagnostics manufacturers, strengthening their capacity to develop, manufacture, and distribute quality diagnostic products that meet regional health needs. These manufacturers include MEDITECH South Africa, Antrum Biotech, Amasu Technologies, and Cape Biologix, local companies whose growth directly supports a more self-reliant African health ecosystem.
PATH builds capacity for disease surveillance, outbreak response, and data-driven decision-making. Together with partners, PATH co-developed digital solutions to support COVID-19 rapid test rollout, improving interoperability, establishing data standards, and creating a blueprint for stronger digital data management. The project also produced a comprehensive reference guide for ministries of health to strengthen digital data management, establishing an adaptable framework applicable to future health emergencies
