PATH and Africa Clinical Research Network partner to optimize execution of clinical trials in Africa
The Africa Clinical Research Network (ACRN) and PATH have formalized a partnership through a memorandum of understanding aimed at strengthening the execution of clinical trials and supporting long-term research capacity across Africa. The collaboration brings together PATH’s technical expertise in clinical trial design and implementation with ACRN’s Africa-led coordination platform, which connects research sites, investigators, and national programs across the continent.
ACRN works to integrate clinical research trials into existing health care and research facilities, supporting African institutions to meet rigorous international standards, improve operational readiness, and expand opportunities for meaningful participation in global product development. Through its Center for Vaccine Innovation and Access (CVIA), PATH works with partners to develop and deliver lifesaving vaccines to women, children, and communities around the globe. PATH has partnered on more than 160 clinical trials in 34 countries, enrolling more than 145,000 participants over the last two decades. Over the last three decades PATH’s work has resulted in the development and introduction of more than 24 vaccines targeting the most dangerous childhood illnesses.
“We look forward to collaborating with PATH on supporting high-quality clinical trial execution, including strengthening clinical research efforts in Africa,” says Dr. Tariro Makadzange, Chief Executive Officer of the ACRN. “We value their extensive experience conducting studies in diverse settings across the continent.”
The partnership will encompass several areas of mutual interest, including strengthening trial design; co-developing tools and training resources that build local capacity; mentorship programs for emerging researchers; and exploring new models and strategies to ensure rural and underserved communities are meaningfully included in product evaluations.
“ACRN is a leader in supporting researchers and facilities to achieve rigorous international standards and operational excellence, and we are excited about the opportunity to work closely together to advance quality research,” says Christina Polyak, Global Head of Clinical for PATH’s Center for Vaccine Innovation and Access.
