PATH's Tala de los Santos was selected by the Washington Global Health Alliance (WGHA) for its 2014 Pioneers of Global Health "Rising Leader" award. The award recognizes the inspirational achievements and collaborative efforts of a rising leader in the field.
"I am honored to receive this award," commented de los Santos. "It is a privilege to work in a field as rewarding as global health. It is also a privilege to be at an organization like PATH where I get to work alongside talented and driven professionals committed to making an impact with their work."
De los Santos leads PATH's diagnostics group, which is at the forefront of advancing solutions to diagnose and treat disease at the point-of-care for people living in low-resource settings. By advancing tools and technologies designed specifically for use in low-resource areas, the diagnostics group creates solutions that enable health innovations to reach people throughout the world.
Seattle is home to a thriving global health sector. In addition to de los Santos, awards were presented to Ken Stuart, PhD, founder and professor, Seattle BioMed, for the Award for Impact; and the Infectious Disease Research Institute, for the Outstanding Global Health Organization. An expert panel comprised of Dr. Ayo Ajayi, PATH; Heidi Breeze-Harris, One by One; Dr. Gary Darmstadt, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation; Dr. Julie McElrath, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center; Dr. Ali Mokdad, Institute for Health Metrics & Evaluation; Dr. Craig Rubens, Global Alliance to Prevent Prematurity & Stillbirth; and last year's "Award for Impact" winner, Dr. King Holmes, University of Washington, Department of Global Health, selected the winners this year.
At its annual Pioneers of Global Health Awards Dinner, held on October 9, 2014, the WGHA will celebrate the award winners. For information about the event, please visit the WGHA website.
