PATH: The way to better health

For nearly 50 years, PATH scientists have been transforming innovative ideas into public health breakthroughs.

All too often, lifesaving health products are out of reach for the people who need them most. They’re either too expensive, unfit for low-resource settings, or both.

PATH partners with countries and communities to create affordable health products that meet locally defined needs, so everyone, everywhere can have a fair chance at a healthy life.

Scroll to explore a few of our most impactful medical devices and technologies.

Safe childbirth

Stopping childbirth’s biggest killer with a $7 device.

Every day, women die from severe bleeding after childbirth—but it doesn’t have to be this way. In partnership with Sinapi Biomedical, PATH developed a simple, affordable device to stop the #1 cause of maternal death. Over 40,000 Ellavi uterine balloon tamponades have been used in 25+ countries, helping to save lives and protect mothers.

Nourished babies

Nourishing babies in 40+ countries with Nifty Feeding Cups.

Some babies can’t breastfeed—but they still need the benefits of breast milk. PATH created the Nifty Feeding Cup so moms can safely feed expressed milk to their babies, even in the toughest conditions. Now in 40+ countries, more than 80,000 cups are helping infants grow up strong and healthy.

User-friendly contraception

Giving women control and comfort with the first new design in 50 years.

Women asked for a nonhormonal birth control option—and PATH listened. We helped develop the first new diaphragm in half a century: the Caya® contoured diaphragm. It’s designed to be comfortable, easy to use, and hormone-free. Since 2013, it’s reached 45+ countries and given over half a million women more self-care options for family planning.

Easy injection

Making medicine easier to administer with millions of pre-filled injections.

What if a medicine dose could come ready to use in one tiny, prefilled device? That’s exactly what PATH’s Uniject™ system does—combining a needle, syringe, and medicine in a single package. It’s been used over 194 million times: from newborn hepatitis B vaccines to self-administered birth control.

Clever quality control

An effective dose for every child with a color-changing sticker.

Vaccines need to be kept cool to work—but how can health workers know if a dose got too warm along the way? PATH helped create a smart little sticker that changes color when exposed to too much heat. Now used on all UNICEF-purchased vaccines, over 10 billion HEATmarker® vaccine vial monitors have helped ensure children get safe, effective vaccines.

Rapid testing

A point-of-care test that transforms the fight against malaria.

Treating P. vivax malaria is risky for people with G6PD deficiency, a condition affecting millions. Without testing, full treatment isn’t safe. PATH helped develop a simple, two-minute blood test—the first WHO-prequalified point-of-care tool for G6PD deficiency. It enables safe, effective treatment in low-resource settings, helping prevent malaria relapses and advancing toward elimination.
