PATH creates market-based solutions that improve access to health products and services
Health innovations can’t deliver themselves. An efficient market—where all people in need have access to high-quality health products and services—is essential for improving global health.
Since our inception in 1977, PATH has worked closely with both public- and private-sector partners to understand markets and address inefficiencies so that appropriately designed, high-impact products are produced and distributed at affordable prices and through the best distribution channels to meet demand. Our work helps ensure that medicines, vaccines, diagnostic tools, and medical devices reach the world’s most vulnerable populations.
Shaping a healthy marketplace
Our expertise in market dynamics includes analyzing current market operations, supply and demand forecasting, supply chain analysis, modeling the impact and cost of new health products, and developing and implementing strategies to strengthen markets.
PATH is uniquely qualified to understand and strengthen health care markets: Our capabilities coexist with PATH’s world-class expertise in product development, public health, and public policy and across a range of health areas, from malaria to noncommunicable diseases. And PATH’s country programs have invaluable knowledge of national health systems, ministry of health priorities, and local market conditions.
Our market dynamics projects bring together experts from across the organization to ensure that all aspects of product performance, public health systems, regulatory considerations, and much more are considered.
From tropical diseases to maternal and child health
Through data-driven, market-based strategies, PATH is improving access to a range of promising health solutions. For example, we have modeled the impact of new diagnostics on control and elimination efforts for neglected tropical diseases as well as the number of lives that could be saved by select maternal and newborn health innovations.
We are helping lay the groundwork for market introduction of improved malaria diagnostics through analysis and guidance on market-entry strategies, procurement, and use recommendations for national malaria control efforts. And we are helping increase access to market-based solutions to improve treatment for pneumonia—the leading infectious cause of death for children under five.
