New PATH office opens in Myanmar
PATH has formally opened a new country office in Myanmar, the Southeast Asian country also known as Burma.
Starting in 2012, PATH began working with the Ministry of Health to identify the country's most urgent health needs and taking steps to establish a country presence in Yangon, the former capital. After negotiating a memorandum of understanding with the ministry, PATH officially opened its doors in Yangon this winter.
A focus on women and children
The office will allow us to build on work already under way in Myanmar to improve nutrition, reproductive health, maternal and neonatal health, and the vaccine supply chain.
Our projects include an initiative to reduce micronutrient deficiencies in the population while creating opportunities for income generation through the introduction of fortified rice. This project represents the first introduction and scale-up of fortified rice in Southeast Asia and aims to create a model that can be replicated across the region to improve economic well-being as well as food security.
Other activities include expanding access to cervical cancer screening and improving maternal and newborn survival.
