GAVI donors can save millions of lives
Renewed support from the GAVI Alliance’s donors and partners is essential to rolling out new immunizations to prevent the deaths of millions of children from vaccine-preventable diseases, said Dr. Christopher J. Elias, PATH president and CEO.
“The unprecedented number of applications that GAVI received for the introduction of pneumococcal and rotavirus vaccines is telling. Families are crying out for solutions to stop the unnecessary deaths of their children from these completely preventable diseases,” Elias said. “The successful rollout of the meningitis A vaccine in Africa last December is also a testament to the vital role that GAVI plays in safeguarding the health of millions of children in the developing world.”
“At GAVI’s pledging conference next week, donors must realize that with their support, it can be possible to live in a world where no child dies from a vaccine-preventable disease,” Elias said.
The pledging conference, to be held Monday, June 13, in London, will seek to raise US$3.7 billion to scale up immunization programs that could save 4 million lives in the world’s poorest countries by 2015.
