Since 2005, PATH Kenya has worked with the Ministry of Health, local partners, PEPFAR, and USAID to end the HIV epidemic. Together, we’ve increased access to lifesaving antiretroviral therapy (ART) and introduced impactful practices like HIV self-testing and differentiated partner notification services. Recent and current efforts include the USAID-funded APHIAplus Health Service Delivery project, which provided HIV testing services to more than 8.5 million individuals and supported more than 120,000 people living with HIV/AIDS on ART, and the ongoing USAID-funded Nuru Ya Mtoto project, which is working with local implementing partners to enhance the capacity of county health and social service systems to deliver sustainable, high-quality, and gender-sensitive HIV services.

Since 2012, PATH has collaborated with the Kenya Ministry of Health to promote nurturing care for early childhood development (NCfECD). Current efforts include the Early Childhood Development project, which has supported the integration of NCfECD into 162 health facilities in Siaya county, reaching more than 1 million children and their caregivers, and implementing the Unitaid-funded Tools for Integrated Management of Childhood Illness (TIMCI) project, which aims to improve health workers’ ability to diagnose severe disease in children by equipping them with pulse oximetry and electronic clinical decision support tools. PATH also supported the establishment of Kenya’s first human milk bank for small and sick newborns—now a model for the region.

PATH provides technical support to aid in the development of strong and resilient health systems. PATH Kenya contributed to the development and implementation of a suite of policies and guidelines supporting the rollout of primary health care (PHC), including the Advocacy, Communication and Community Engagement Strategy for PHC, and helped build capacity of Kenya’s Health NGOs Network (HENNET) to promote local ownership, agenda setting, and accountability.

PATH Kenya works closely with the Kenya Ministry of Health to strengthen health systems and optimize policies to reduce vaccine-preventable diseases. Recent and ongoing efforts include supporting the introduction of COVID-19 vaccines and increasing uptake, planning the introduction of typhoid conjugate vaccine into routine immunization, supporting the country’s pilot of the world’s first malaria vaccine (developed by GlaxoSmithKline and PATH), and serving as a member of the USAID-funded MOMENTUM Routine Immunization Transformation and Equity (M-RITE) project, which aims to identify root causes of low and inequitable vaccine coverage and co-create locally appropriate solutions.

PATH’s Living Labs initiative applies human-centered design to co-create solutions to longstanding health challenges. In Kenya, we’ve established a user advisory group of more than 200 unique users across the country, levels of the health system, and health areas to co-develop solutions aimed at accelerating the pace of innovation, lowering risk, and increasing the likelihood of uptake across health areas and specialties. Projects have included strengthening responses to postpartum hemorrhage, developing new solutions for enhancing immunization uptake, creating an integrated diabetes care pack, and providing digital clinical decision support for small and sick newborns.

PATH Kenya works to advance interconnected interventions such as strengthening supply chains, leveraging data to drive decision-making, and increasing access to screening and care to improve NCD treatment. Through partnership with the Ministry of Health at both the national and the county level, our work has strengthened the NCD data included in electronic medical records, developed digital tools like the NCD Navigator to monitor strategy implementation and guide resource allocation, and mapped end-to-end the NCD supply chain to identify gaps and bottlenecks in NCD-related commodities. In Makueni County, our work to integrate NCD care into a broader PHC model has improved NCD screening, diagnosis, and linkage to treatment and comprehensive care for hypertension and diabetes, with a cumulative 52,342 patients screened of whom 11,511 have been diagnosed and enrolled for NCD care as of September 2022.

PATH Kenya advances high-impact interdisciplinary projects to help provide all patients with equitable access to lifesaving medical products and equipment at all levels of the health care system. Together with a consortium of partners, our work includes diagnosing root causes of lack of devices and market development, including market research, barrier analysis, demand and supply forecasting, and market sizing. This research is then used to support the Ministry of Health and other decision-makers in the development of evidence-based strategies to close the gap in access to medical products and equipment.

By working collaboratively with partners at national and subnational levels, PATH Kenya supports evidence-based policy development, creates data-driven tools to track implementation, strengthens community capacity for advocacy, mobilizes resources, and holds decision-makers accountable for their commitments to improve health outcomes. Between PATH’s 30-year partnership with the Ministry of Health and more than two decades supporting policy development and implementation, we have the deep understanding of the country and county contexts needed to create lasting positive change.
