Since 2007, PATH has collaborated with Ethiopia’s Federal Ministry of Health, community groups, and other partners to strengthen the country’s public health systems and address the most pressing health threats, including malaria, tuberculosis, and vaccine-preventable disease. We implement high-impact, evidence-based, sustainable programs to support those most at risk.

Promoting health equity

For more than a decade, PATH has worked with Ethiopia’s Federal Ministry of Health and regional health bureaus to enhance good governance and promote health equity for all Ethiopians. Together, we design policies that strengthen community-based child health programs, enhance immunization campaigns, and improve treatment for malaria and tuberculosis.

Digital tools, better health

PATH leverages digital tools to monitor health threats and deliver high-quality services to the people who need it most. We use a digital health information system to track health data, an app to conduct household epidemiological surveys, and we’re working to strengthen internet connectivity so more health facilities can use these tools.

Strengthening primary health care for all

In Ethiopia, we are working to increase access to quality and equitable health services by improving primary health care systems across the country. PATH works with partners in the country to design patient-centered, integrated approaches for better maternal health, family planning, and newborn and child health. At the zone and woreda-level, PATH partners with local decision-makers and community groups to mobilize financial resources, assess drug and equipment supplies, support health care workers, and increase awareness through community engagement and health service promotion.

Eliminating communicable diseases

PATH’s Malaria Control and Elimination Project for Africa (MACEPA) has worked with Ethiopia’s Federal Ministry of Health since 2007—providing support at the national and community level—to prevent, control, and eventually eliminate malaria from the country.

Producing and using better data for decision-making

With better data, and strong analytics tools, we are better able to design evidence-based policies, allocate resources efficiently, and monitor program effectiveness. PATH, the Federal Ministry of Health in Ethiopia, and regional health bureaus are working together to advance the collection and use of data. Together, with better data, we improve service delivery for communities, ensure essential medicines reach those who need them, monitor diseases to prevent and respond to outbreaks, and much more. For example, using tools like Open Data Kit and the DHIS2 platform, we’ve digitized and streamlined the way we collect, monitor, and track data related to malaria cases and care.

Increasing immunization coverage

For more than 15 years, PATH Ethiopia has been working to increase immunization coverage across the country, so more people have access to lifesaving vaccinations. PATH supports the development of national roll out plans, facilitates data management and quality for campaigns, and provides high-level technical assistance for introducing new vaccines, including vaccines against HPV and COVID-19—with a particular focus on equitable vaccine distribution. For example, the Afar Regional State and the Somali Regional State in Ethiopia are historically hard to reach areas with low vaccination coverage. In these states, PATH promotes community-level mobilization and awareness, while helping improve data quality to strengthen immunization program planning.
