Global Pandemic Influenza Action Plan to Increase Vaccine Supply: Progress Report 2006 - 2008
This progress report is a follow on to the World Health Organization's (WHO's) Global Pandemic Influenza Action Plan (GAP) released in May 2005 to address the global shortage of influenza vaccines for epidemics and potential pandemics. It summarizes the WHO’s progress between 2006 and 2008 toward meeting the overall objective of increased availability of influenza vaccine in the event of a pandemic and details the plan's three agenda items to increase seasonal vaccine use, enhance influenza vaccine production, and further research and development. It outlines activities implemented toward the goals of helping countries execute effective seasonal influenza vaccination programs, improve access to vaccines for those unable to afford them, and plan for equitable access to and deployment of pandemic vaccine. Underscored in the report is the need for national immunization policies to prioritize increasing demand for seasonal influenza vaccine and to secure sustained vaccine introduction by mobilizing resources.
