The Global Burden of Typhoid Fever

This article, published in the Bulletin of the World Health Organization, summarizes the findings of a literature search of population-based studies using confirmation by blood culture of typhoid fever cases. The authors estimated that, in the year 2000, typhoid fever caused 21,650,974 illnesses and 216,510 deaths and that paratyphoid fever caused 5,412,744 illnesses.
