An Inter-Laboratory Comparison of Standard Membrane-Feeding Assays for Evaluation of Malaria Transmission-Blocking Vaccines

This article, published in the Malaria Journal, examined the variability of the standard membrane-feeding assay (SMFA)—the “gold standard” assay to measure transmission-blocking activities of Plasmodium falciparum infection—across different laboratories. Study results showed that SMFAs in different laboratories provided similar results in terms of precision and sensitivity, therefore confirming that multi-center vaccine development programs can effectively compare and analyze results.
