Update on Intussusception Following Rotavirus Vaccine Administration

This web page provides an extract of a report on the World Health Organization's Global Advisory Committee on Vaccine Safety (GACVS) meeting held in December 2013 where the committee reviewed new data from Australia and the United States regarding intussusception risk related to both globally available rotavirus vaccines, RotaTeq® and Rotarix®. GACVS acknowledged that the findings tend to confirm a risk of intussusception following administration of both vaccines, in particular during the first seven days following a first dose. However, they concluded that overall the risk of intussusception following rotavirus vaccination remains small compared to the benefits of preventing the impact of severe diarrhea.
