Human Papillomavirus Vaccines: WHO Position Paper, October 2014

This article, published in the Weekly Epidemiological Record, summarizes the World Health Organization's recommendations on the inclusion of human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccines in national immunization programs. It focuses primarily on the prevention of cervical cancer, but also considers the broader spectrum of cancers and other diseases preventable by HPV vaccination. This update replaces their earlier recommendation from 2009, with the principle change concerning the number of doses of vaccine recommended for different age groups. In 2017, this recommendation was replaced to include the 9-valent HPV vaccine and guidance on vaccine delivery strategies.
