Outsourcing the Vaccine Supply Chain and Logistics System to the Private Sector: The Western Cape Experience in South Africa
More and more countries are engaging the private sector in vaccine supply chain and logistic functions. As a part of this review, a case study was conducted in the Western Cape of South Africa whereby the Biovac Institute (a third-party, private-sector company) took over the roles of vaccine procurement, warehouse management, inventory management, and vaccine distribution directly to health centers. This review attempts to provide evidence-based information around the cost and benefits of outsourcing the supply chain and logistic functions of the system.
