This article, published in The Lancet, aims to provide a deeper understanding of the societal factors that threaten to compromise realization of the public health gains that immunization can achieve in the next decade and beyond. Also discussed are conceptual and technological scientific advances that offer opportunities to expand the portfolio of immunizations against viral and bacterial diseases and to pioneer the first vaccines against human parasitic and fungal diseases.
