Product Vision for the Better Immunization Data (BID) Initiative

This document reviews the steps to organize how processes and information and communication technology infrastructure can be integrated and standardized to meet a ministry of health’s vision and requirements to increase vaccination coverage for under-reached populations. It combines a top-down approach with a bottom-up view—beginning with national strategies, while incorporating current user context and health facility applications.

Stakeholder Perceptions of a (DTwP-HepB-Hib) Pentavalent Vaccine in the Uniject Injection System

One potential way to improve coverage of basic vaccines is to combine several vaccine antigens into one injection that is delivered with an easy-to-use, single-dose, autodisable device. Pentavalent vaccine in the prefilled Uniject™ injection system provides this format. To assess the readiness of stakeholders to accept this product presentation, we conducted interviews and discussion groups with health care workers, policy and procurement officers, and Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI) managers in six countries.

Freeze-Protection of Aluminum-Adjuvanted Vaccines: PATH Formulation Technology

PATH has developed a low-cost and straightforward approach for protecting aluminum-adjuvanted vaccines from irreversible damage that results from freezing. Many current vaccines of importance to global health contain an aluminum-salt adjuvant (such as aluminum hydroxide or aluminum phosphate) and could benefit from this freeze-protection technology. There is no intellectual property barrier for manufacturers wishing to adopt the technology; it has been placed in the public domain. This technical dossier summarizes the rationale for freeze protection, application of the technology to specific vaccines, the data obtained to date, and comments on the likely regulatory pathway for vaccines incorporating the technology.
