Under the Making Medical Injections Safer project, PATH has supported ministries of health and environment to develop the systems needed for effective health care waste management. This literature review details the key findings on the feasibility and acceptability of home delivery of depo-subQ provera 104™ in the Uniject™ injection system  (depo-subQ in Uniject). The review focused on self-injection and looked specifically at subcutaneous depot medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA) compared to the intramuscular formulation; considerations for home administration of injectable contraception, particularly in low-resource settings; and identified research needs for home administration, including self-injection, of depo-subQ in Uniject. This report from the vaccine technologies team at PATH presents results from an economic model that calculates the costs involved in delivering IPV vaccine in Indian immunization clinics according to three strategies: (1) intradermal delivery of reduced volumes of vaccine per dose, (2) use of adjuvants to allow a reduced IPV antigen content per dose, and (3) reduction of the number of doses per IPV immunization schedule. The strategies include delivery by standard technique and with alternative delivery devices.

This report describes use of the Uniject™ device prefilled with 10 international units (IU) of oxytocin for actively managing the third stage of labor in selected health centers in Mali. Although this single-dose, autodisable injection device has previously been used for tetanus toxoid vaccination in Mali, the Ministry of Health lacked documentation of the safety and feasibility of using the device to deliver oxytocin for active management of the third stage of labor (AMTSL).
