A Moving Warehouse Delivers Vaccines and Essential Health Supplies in Senegal

In March 2011, the government of Senegal began using a "moving warehouse" to transport vaccines and vaccine supplies from regional stores directly to district stores and health posts on a monthly basis in the Saint-Louis region. This photo set explains how the moving warehouse works and shares results from a project Optimize–supported pilot demonstration of the moving warehouse from 2010 to 2012.

A Moving Warehouse in Senegal

As part of the project Optimize traveling exhibit, this banner illustrates the concept of integrating vaccines with other health products in streamlined supply chains. It highlights Senegal’s “moving warehouse,” which was introduced to offer a better system of distribution down the chain. Rather than having health facilities collect vaccines and supplies, the moving warehouse delivery teams visit each facility, check inventory, and replenish stock as needed. Each team includes a supervisor and cold chain technician who provide supportive supervision to health care workers and ensure that equipment is operating correctly.

Opportunities and Challenges of Developing Thermostable Vaccines

This article, published in Expert Reviews (Expert Rev. Vaccines 8(5), 547-557; May 2009), reviews approaches being used to develop thermostable vaccine formulations that are resistant to damage caused by freezing or excessive heat and could reduce dependence on the cold chain. The article discusses the challenges associated with the implementation of these novel formulations as well as the potential benefits of protecting vaccines from damage caused by breaks in the cold chain.

Optimize: Albania Report

Optimize: Guatemala Report

This report presents the results and lessons learned in a collaborative effort between the Guatemala Ministry of Public Health and Social Assistance (MSPAS), the Pan American Health Organization, and project Optimize. The demonstration project attempted to respond to the challenge of introducing new vaccines in Guatemala by implementing an information system for managing individual vaccination records and logistics. For this purpose, two integrated modules were created in the health information system “SIGSA Web.”

Optimize: South Sudan Report

Project Optimize, a five-year partnership between the World Health Organization (WHO) and PATH, conducted a small implementation activity in South Sudan. The goal of the activity was to test the feasibility and usefulness of implementing a mobile and cloud-based vaccine stock management information system capable of providing EPI staff at all levels timely access to vaccine stock and demand data. This report summarizes the results of the activity.

Outsourcing the Vaccine Supply Chain and Logistics System to the Private Sector: The Western Cape Experience in South Africa

Facilitated by project Optimize, a World Health Organization and PATH collaboration, this review was conducted in the Western Cape of South Africa whereby the Biovac Institute (a third-party, private-sector company) took over the roles of vaccine procurement, warehouse management, inventory management, and vaccine distribution directly to health centers.
