This fact sheet highlights PATH's efforts to reduce deaths caused by diarrheal disease by improving the current formulation of oral rehydration solution (ORS) so that it not only reverses dehydration, but also treats diarrheal symptoms. By adding a treatment agent to ORS, PATH and our partners hope to increase ORS utilization in low-resource countries where deaths due to diarrheal disease are the highest.

This report shares the results of a pilot introduction of oxytocin in the Uniject® device for use with active management of the third stage of labor that was conducted at the institutional level in Guatemala in 2009. Results include details on the feasibility of introducing oxytocin in Uniject in this context as well as the acceptability of this technology among health care providers and facility managers. This overview describes how PATH has developed a low-cost and straightforward technology for protecting aluminum-adjuvanted liquid vaccines from the irreversible damage that results from freezing. Many current vaccines of importance to global health contain an aluminum salt adjuvant or its equivalent (such as aluminum hydroxide, aluminum phosphate, or calcium phosphate) and would benefit from the technology.
