Semisynthetic Artemisinin: Cross-Sector Partnership to Stabilize the Antimalarial Drug Supply

Artemisinin-based combination therapy is considered the gold standard treatment for malaria, but global demand has often outpaced production, and pricing has been volatile. With funding from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, PATH and our partners set out to develop a new pharmaceutical manufacturing process to produce commercial volumes of high-quality, nonseasonal, and affordable artemisinin to supplement the plant-based supply. This poster, presented at the Bay Area World Malaria Day Symposium on April 25, 2014, presents key facts on malaria, the market for artemisinin, partner roles, and commercial production.

Courageous Community Leaders Go Above and Beyond to Fight Tuberculosis One Patient at a Time

This is the story of how two community members, Mr. Ritte and Mr. Kiondo, decided to team up to fight tuberculosis (TB). With PATH's training, the two men were able to improve TB case detection and treatment success in their community and in other districts, helping to foster the TB prevention, diagnosis, and treatment goals of the Tanzanian Ministry of Health and Social Welfare. Giving Back: Community Support for TB/HIV Treatment in Tanzania

In the fight against tuberculosis (TB) in Tanzania, PATH has been encouraging community members in several districts to take part in TB case detection. This story describes how one community member, Mohammed, has made a difference in Zanzibar. A former cocaine addict, Mohammed works at a recovery center for drug addicts. With training organized by PATH, he learned how to screen and refer people who may have TB; he also support patients during their treatment. Mohammed’s work is critical to the larger community, increasing diagnosis and treatment as well as awareness around TB and TB/HIV. This story is one of a series of success stories that showcase some of the ways that PATH’s work in TB is having an impact on people’s lives in a variety of settings around the world. Spotting Tuberculosis From the Frontlines: Engaging Pharmacies in Case-Finding

One of PATH’s strategies to find and treat tuberculosis (TB) patients is to build stronger referral networks. These collaborations are important in identifying patients who might otherwise be missed. This story describes how a pharmacy worker in Tanzania referred a mother and her young child for TB diagnosis using five simple screening questions that she learned in a PATH training.
