Challenges in Measuring and Analyzing Vector Control Interventions: Indicators, Baselines and Definitions

Implementation of indoor residual spraying for vector control is shifting with the emergence of insecticide resistance. Cross-analyzing vector control interventions across countries, partners, and strategies is hampered by measurement methods and indicator definitions. Small changes in definitions can impact the interpretation and analysis of the effectiveness of vector control programs.

Evaluation of SD BIOLINE oncho/LF IgG4 Biplex and SD BIOLINE lymphatic filariasis IgG4 screening tools in filarial-endemic regions of Cameroon

Lymphatic filariasis is caused primarily by Wuchereria bancrofti (Wb) and can be co-endemic with certain filarial parasites in central Africa. Two new IgG4 rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) are available from Standard Diagnostics, Inc. The aim of this research was to determine the specificity of the Wb123 RDTs in co-endemic zones.

First Year Results From the Community-Led Responses for Elimination (Core) Trial Assessing the Effectiveness of Reactive Focal Drug Administration Compared to Reactive Focal Test and Treat in Reducing Plasmodium falciparum Infection Prevalence and Incidence in an Elimination Setting in Southern Province, Zambia

This trial evaluated two malaria control approaches: reactive focal test and treat, and reactive focal drug administration. This is critical for Zambia, where malaria transmission is low enough in some areas that it is feasible to reactively seek and treat all infections in the index case and neighboring households.

Impact of Indoor Residual Spraying With Actellic in the Context of a Comprehensive Malaria Elimination Strategy in Southern Province Zambia

There is a lack of evidence on impact and cost of new insecticides used for indoor residual spraying (IRS) to protect against malaria. This study analyzed data collected in Southern Province, Zambia to retrospectively evaluate the effectiveness of next-generation IRS, such as Actellic, on malaria incidence and prevalence in Zambia.

The Impact of Shifting IRS Operations on Malaria Transmission Rates in Northern Ghana: 2014-2016

Changes in ingredients have contributed to operational shifts in indoor residual spraying (IRS) in Ghana. These changes allowed for observational study to better describe the impact of IRS with a third generation IRS product with a focus on the impact of shifting ingredients and introducing IRS into previously unsprayed districts.

Improvements in Quality of Malaria Case Management Through County Referral Hospital Medicine and Therapeutics Committees in Western Kenya—the Migori County Experience

Kenya’s Hospital Medicine and Therapeutic Committees (HMTCs) evaluate clinical drug use and assure review of hospital outcomes. Unfortunately, few hospitals have functioning committees. MalariaCare worked to revive HMTCs to strengthen malaria case management. This report describes effects on malaria case management and health systems in Migori County Referral Hospital.

Lessons Learned: Malaria Diagnostic Refresher Training in Africa Francophone Countries

Parasite detection is required to diagnose malaria, parasite counting is required to monitor treatment for severe cases, and species identification is required to correctly treat malaria. MalariaCare helps countries improve the accuracy of malaria diagnostic testing. This study examines MalariaCare’s malaria diagnostic refresher trainings for laboratory staff in francophone Africa.
