This document presents findings from the evaluation of the PEPFAR Male Norms Initiative, which indicate that interventions to promote gender-equitable norms can successfully influence young men’s attitudes toward gender norms and lead to healthier relationships. The study provides empirical evidence that a community-based intervention focused on combating inequitable and risk-supporting gender norms is associated with reductions in partner violence and improvements in risk outcomes for HIV and sexually transmitted infections.

In the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), PATH and our partners are working from the ground up to better link people to HIV and other health services through the five-year ProVIC project. Our programmatic approach includes working through “champion communities” to link people with integrated HIV prevention, care, and support services. In November 2006, more than 100 community activists, advocates, researchers, service providers, health care professionals, and practitioners gathered in Kampala, Uganda, for a first-of-its-kind meeting on strengthening regional work on gender-based violence. Participants from 15 countries discussed innovative interventions, unexpected challenges, and lessons learned from their collective experiences in the field.The meeting was a collaborative initiative of PATH, Raising Voices, the Gender-Based Violence Prevention Network, the Interagency Gender Working Group, and the East Africa Regional Office of the US Agency for International Development. This report synthesizes the workshops, presentations, and discussions that were held over the two days.

This publication provides an overview of a conference on femicide convened  jointly by PATH, the Inter-American Alliance for the Prevention of Gender-based Violence, the Medical Research Council of South Africa, and the World Health Organization in Washington, DC, April 14–16, 2008. The conference brought together activists, researchers, and forensic professionals from 13 countries, with the aim of identifying common ground for strengthening research and galvanizing global action to prevent femicide and end the impunity so often granted to perpetrators.

This curriculum was designed for trainers of public health workers, community organizers, youth advocates, and teachers. It draws on materials developed by many organizations and represents the culmination of several years of study, program implementation, and evaluation in the area of female genital mutilation (FGM). Its basic premise is that the discontinuation of FGM must be addressed at the community level. Its purpose is to introduce community workers to the concept of “communication for change” and to inspire and transfer skills for community-based approaches to problem-solving. The curriculum was field-tested in Kenya and Somalia. It is available as one large file or as several smaller files for easier downloading.
