Sparking Innovation to Save Lives: How the US Can Advance Global Health Through New Technologies

This second annual policy report from the Global Health Technologies Coalition—a group of almost 40 nonprofit organizations working to increase awareness of the urgent need for vaccines, diagnostics, drugs, microbicides, and other products that save lives in the developing world—outlines some of the steps that will help curb unnecessary deaths, extend lives, and secure healthier futures. Serving as a guide for policymakers, the report documents promising policy actions taken over the past year in the areas of US investments in global health and international development, regulatory pathways to ensure the safety and efficacy of health tools, and incentives and innovative financing mechanisms to spur global health product development. This report offers recommendations for how US policymakers can continue to have a lead in improving health worldwide.

Stabilizing Influenza Vaccines

If a highly virulent pandemic strain were to emerge in today’s interconnected world, influenza has the potential to kill millions of people, especially in developing countries with limited to no resources for pandemic planning, preparedness, and outbreak response. PATH's work in developing thermostable influenza vaccines holds promise for extending product shelf life and easing logistics during introduction and rapid deployment to hard-to-reach populations—markedly improving developing-country preparedness and ability to contain the virus at its point of origin. Stakeholder Perceptions of a (DTwP-HepB-Hib) Pentavalent Vaccine in the Uniject Injection System

One potential way to improve coverage of basic vaccines is to combine several vaccine antigens into one injection that is delivered with an easy-to-use, single-dose, autodisable device. Pentavalent vaccine in the prefilled Uniject™ injection system provides this format. To assess the readiness of stakeholders to accept this product presentation, we conducted interviews and discussion groups with health care workers, policy and procurement officers, and Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI) managers in six countries.

Strengthening Human Milk Banking

PATH is working to promote human milk banking to improve nutrition for infants who are especially vulnerable, such as those in resource-limited settings who are pre-term, low birthweight, severely malnourished, born to HIV-positive mothers, or orphaned. These briefs provide an overview of why human milk banking is important and how it can be integrated within breastfeeding strategies.

Strengthening Human Milk Banking: A Global Implementation Framework, Version 1

Drawing on the experiences of milk banks around the world, PATH developed this document as a high-level blueprint or toolkit that ministries of health, policymakers, and implementers can use to identify the critical components required for an effective human milk bank program. Our goal is that this framework serve as a powerful resource, facilitating communication with the global human milk banking community, empowering policymakers with the tools and information they need to develop and support locally appropriate human milk banks and, ultimately, ensuring that vulnerable infants around the world have access to this lifesaving intervention.

Sublingual, Heat-Stable Oxytocin Tablets for Postpartum Hemorrhage: A Simple, Rapid, and Needle-Free Approach to Reducing Maternal Mortality

Postpartum hemorrhage (PPH), or excessive bleeding after childbirth, is the single largest cause of maternal death worldwide. In this poster, created for the 2013 Saving Lives at Birth DevelopmentXChange, PATH proposed to develop heat-stable fast-dissolving oxytocin tablets for sublingual delivery, helping to more easily and effectively prevent and treat PPH in low-resource communities. The small, needle-free tablet format eliminates the risks associated with sharps use and disposal. Its heat stability also reduces the need for expensive cold chain transport and storage.

Summary Report: Evaluation of Retractable Syringes in a Measles-Rubella Immunization Campaign in Peru

In 2006, UNICEF, the Peruvian Ministry of Health, and PATH performed an evaluation in Peru to assess perceptions of acceptability and safety of automatic retractable syringes in an immunization setting and their affect on waste disposal. The evaluation showed that retractable syringes were seen as a reliable, easy-to-use, preferred alternative to standard disposables in the campaign setting. The evaluation also found that retractable syringes have the potential to improve the safe management of sharps waste.

Supporting Effective Management of Preeclampsia/Eclampsia: Mobile Application for Dosing and Dilution of Magnesium Sulfate

Severe preeclampsia and eclampsia (PE/E) are among the leading causes of maternal death and disability worldwide. Magnesium sulfate is the treatment recommended by the World Health Organization, but it remains underutilized due to difficult administration. PATH designed a mobile application for dosing and dilution of magnesium sulfate to address the challenges of correctly calculating magnesium sulfate dosage given multiple concentrations and a complex dosing regimen.
