PATH’s Ultra Rice® Project relies on the involvement of innovative commercial companies that recognize not only the huge market potential of fortified rice, but also the importance of investing in the overall health and well-being of their communities. PATH works with rice millers and pasta manufacturers who show a strong commitment to making fortified rice widely available. Their involvement is critical to building private-sector demand and ensuring long-term availability. They also provide a sustainable supply of Ultra Rice for public-sector initiatives and introduction trials—important studies that can give policymakers the evidence base they need to adopt Ultra Rice on a wider scale.

Unión de Arroceros—Colombia

• In 2002, Arroceros became the first company to produce a commercial fortified rice product utilizing the Ultra Rice technology.
• This Ultra Rice pioneer has not only introduced a fortified rice product on the commercial market, but also has been selling Ultra Rice to Medellin municipality for use in school feeding programs for 66,000 children.
• In 2008, using new formulas developed by PATH, Arroceros will be selling rice fortified with iron, zinc, vitamin B1, and folic acid in both domestic and international markets.

Camil Alimentos—Brazil

• PATH transferred the Ultra Rice technology to Camil Alimentos in 2006.
• Camil is one of the largest rice millers in Latin America.
• Camil has produced the Ultra Rice needed for two research projects that are ongoing in Brazil and India and will produce Ultra Rice for two large government pilot trials slated to begin in 2008.
