PATH’s Ultra Rice® project relies on the involvement of innovative commercial companies that recognize not only the huge market potential for fortified rice, but also the importance of investing in the overall health and well-being of their communities. To ensure the local availability of Ultra Rice grains, PATH licenses the Ultra Rice technology to select producers, mainly pasta manufacturers, but also rice millers and nutrient suppliers. All partners are required to make their Ultra Rice grains widely accessible to public-sector buyers and resource-poor consumers through preferential pricing and supply commitments.

The involvement of commercial partners is critical to building private-sector demand and ensuring long-term availability of Ultra Rice supply in key country markets. Our commercial partners also provide a sustainable supply of Ultra Rice for introduction pilots and efficacy trials—important studies that can give policymakers the evidence base they need to adopt Ultra Rice on a wider scale.

Adorella Alimentos Ltda—Brazil

• In 2008, PATH partnered with the Brazilian pasta manufacturer Adorella Alimentos Ltda, with the twofold goal of bringing Ultra Rice to Brazilian markets and generating a ready, local supply of Ultra Rice for two government-sponsored efficacy trials scheduled to commence in February 2010.
• Adorella manufactures numerous pasta and other packaged food products.
• Production of Ultra Rice began in May 2009.

• Swagat was the first pasta manufacturer to partner with PATH and undergo technical transfer activities in India.
• Located in West Bengal, Swagat manufactures a variety of pasta products under the brand Captain & Latoo.
• Swagat’s products are available in North and North-Eastern India, as well as in the neighboring countries of Bhutan, Bangladesh, and Nepal.

Unión de Arroceros S.A.—Colombia

• In 2002, Arroceros became the first company in Latin America to produce a commercial fortified rice product utilizing the Ultra Rice technology.
• This Ultra Rice pioneer not only introduced a fortified rice product to commercial markets, it also sold rice fortified with Ultra Rice to the Medellin municipality for use in their school meal program, which feeds 66,000 children each day.
• Soon, Arroceros will resume the sale of fortified rice in both domestic and international markets, using Ultra Rice grains manufactured by PATH’s Brazilian partner, Adorella Alimentos.
