Today, Mark Green was confirmed by the US Senate as the administrator of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). Prior to this appointment, Green served four terms in Congress, from 1999–2007, and was named ambassador to Tanzania by President George W. Bush. With experience both in politics and international development, Green assumes leadership of USAID amid emerging threats to global health security, looming infectious disease outbreaks, mounting humanitarian crises, and significant proposed cuts to the agency's budget.

A statement from Amie Batson, PATH's chief strategy officer, and former senior deputy assistant administrator for global health at USAID follows:

"PATH congratulates Ambassador Mark Green on his appointment as administrator of the United States Agency for International Development. Amb. Green brings an exceptionally valuable mix of political and international development experience to the agency at this crucial time. USAID is a leader in promoting global health, development, and stability, with a distinguished history of investing in health innovation and scaling high-impact, proven solutions to help the most vulnerable survive and thrive.

USAID's work is increasingly critical in today's interconnected world where health and development go hand in hand. Amb. Green's vision and experience is essential to maintaining USAID's leadership and robust record of global health progress. Strong leadership can help continue the agency's commitment to developing and introducing transformative new tools and evidence-based approaches to save and improve lives around the world. PATH is grateful and proud to have worked with USAID for decades to help improve the health of hundreds of millions of people through advances in life-saving vaccines, diagnostics, medical devices, and delivery approaches. PATH looks forward to working with Amb. Green and USAID to explore new modes of public-private partnerships that leverage resources and expertise across all sectors, and ensure the scope and impact of USAID's lifesaving work continues to grow for generations to come."
