Dr. Halida Hanum Akhter, the chair of PATH’s board of directors, has won this year’s United Nations Population Award. The award goes to individuals and institutions in recognition of their work in population and improving the health and welfare of individuals.

Dr. Akhter is the director-general of the Family Planning Association of Bangladesh, which was established in 1953. Throughout her 30-year career in global health, Dr. Akhter has researched and managed reproductive health programs and technologies. She has held positions at the Ford Foundation, the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the World Bank. In 1986, she founded the Bangladesh Institute of Research for Promotion of Essential and Reproductive Health and Technologies, conducting contraceptive research and assessing programmatic needs and services in the country.
