Conference to feature Zambia's impressive gains in scaling up the fight against malaria

PATH staff will present their work to experts attending the 56th annual meeting of the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (ASTMH), being held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, from November 4 through 8.

At the conference, the Malaria Control and Evaluation Partnership in Africa (MACEPA) at PATH and its partners will share lessons learned related to scaling up malaria control interventions in Zambia: developing systems for managing the complex logistics of mass distribution of insecticide-treated nets (ITNs); influencing ITN use among children under age six; sharing results about how ITN use affects child health; developing high-tech mapping tools and methods for planning household spraying with insecticides; and demonstrating mathematical modeling of malaria causes and transmission.

Dr. Kent Campbell, MACEPA program director and 2007 president of ASTMH, will preside over the annual meeting. Special guests include Dr. Tadataka Yamada, president of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation’s global health program, who will address attendees at the opening plenary, and Dr. Awa Coll-Seck, executive secretary of the Roll Back Malaria Partnership Secretariat and PATH board member, who will spotlight Africa’s advances and challenges in her commemorative address.

Scientists, clinicians, and others with interests in the prevention and control of tropical diseases through research and education will gather to support ASTMH’s mission of promoting world health by preventing and controlling tropical diseases through research and education.
