Public—private partnerships drive innovation to improve the health of poor populations
Dr. Christopher Elias, PATH’s president and CEO, and staff members Yvette Gerrans and Dr. Marc LaForce authored an article on public–private partnerships in the recently released Global Forum Update on Research for Health Volume 5. The article explores how public–private partnerships can be used for public good and highlights PATH’s experience in partnering with the private sector to develop a meningitis vaccine.
The Global Forum for Health Research, an independent international foundation based in Geneva, focuses on promoting an environment that fosters innovative solutions for the health of poor populations. In doing so, it places particular emphasis on health equity as the central goal. With a similar focus, PATH acts as an intermediary between industry and the public sector to bridge the gap between public health needs and commercial interests. Over the last 30 years, PATH has successfully advanced and facilitated the commercial introduction of more than 50 new technologies to improve health in developing countries. Through our collaboration with commercial partners and African public health officials, PATH has helped to develop a meningitis A vaccine slated for public introduction in Africa’s “meningitis belt” beginning in late 2009.
The fifth volume of the Global Forum Update on Research for Health provides insights into the newest thinking on innovation for global health. Articles authored by more than 30 leading institutions and professionals from around the world reflect on how policy, social, technological, and corporate innovations can be fostered for global health.
