New commission promotes strategic US approach to global health
On April 21 PATH’s president and CEO, Dr. Christopher J. Elias, joined national security experts, members of the US Congress, and other influential US leaders at the launch of the new Center for Strategic & International Studies (CSIS) Commission on Smart Global Health Policy in Washington, DC.
As one of a select group of featured commissioners at the launch, Dr. Elias participated in a roundtable discussion to address the question, “What is global health about today?” Other featured speakers included: Congressman Keith Ellison (D-MN); Thomas R. Pickering, former US ambassador to the United Nations; Margaret G. McGlynn, president of Global Vaccines & Infectious Diseases for Merck and Co.; Michael Merson, director of the Global Health Institute at Duke University; and Patricia E. Mitchell, president and CEO of The Paley Center for Media.
The commission brings together a wide variety of innovative leaders from the public and private sectors to develop policy recommendations for Congress and the Obama presidential administration to promote a long-term, strategic US approach to global health. It is co-chaired by Dr. Helene Gayle, president and CEO of CARE, and Admiral William J. Fallon, former commander of the US Central Command and US Pacific Command.
At the commission’s request, PATH authored a report about the critical role that health technologies play in improving global health. The report, Policies and Practices to Advance Global Health Technologies, will inform commission members and others about the need for policies and resources to support the development and delivery of health technologies.
