Dr. Molly Coye elected chair of PATH board at annual meeting; Vincent McGee elected to board

Seattle, WA, May 29, 2009—PATH, a leading US-based international health organization, announced today that the board of directors elected Molly Coye, MD, MPH, as chair; Vera Cordeiro, MD, as vice chair; and Vincent McGee to the board during its annual three-day meeting at PATH’s Seattle headquarters last week.

“PATH’s wide network of research partners, funders, international health agencies, and other organizations will be well served by this new leadership for our board,” said Christopher J. Elias, MD, MPH, the president and CEO of PATH.

Coye is the founder and CEO of HealthTech (www.healthtechcenter.org), a San Francisco-based nonprofit research organization dedicated to advancing the use of new health technologies in the United States. Her career has spanned the public, private, and nonprofit sectors. She has served as the state health officer in California and New Jersey, an executive with the Good Samaritan Hospital in Santa Clara, California, a health software development firm, and an advisor to investors in emerging health technologies. Coye is a member of the Institute of Medicine (IOM) and co-authored the IOM reports To Err is Human: Building a Safer Health System and Crossing the Quality Chasm, and she serves on the board of directors of Aetna, Inc. Coye was also a member of the board of trustees of the American Hospital Association and has served as a consultant with the World Health Organization, Pan American Health Organization, and other institutions in Latin America and Asia. She joined PATH’s board of directors in 2001.

Cordeiro joined the PATH board in 2005 and served as the board chair last year. She is founder and CEO of Associação Saúde Criança Renascer (www.criancarenascer.org.br), a nonprofit organization based in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Renascer’s mission is to assist impoverished children released from Lagoa Hospital, one of Rio’s largest public hospitals, by taking a holistic approach to addressing families’ well-being and economic self-sufficiency. Since its inception in 1991, Renascer and its network have helped more than 36,000 people get out of poverty, and the Renascer model has been replicated at 24 public hospitals in Brazil. She was elected as an Ashoka Fellow in 1992, AVINA Leader in 2000, Schwab Social Entrepreneur in 2001, and Skoll Foundation Social Entrepreneur in 2006. She served as a member of Ashoka’s board of directors in 2005 and 2006.

McGee was a member of PATH's board from 2001 to 2007 and vice chair from 2003 to 2007. He has been assigned to the board's finance and governance committees. McGee has more than 35 years of experience as an executive and consultant for nonprofit organizations and foundations, with a focus on foundations that support human rights, social change, and economic justice. He was vice president and secretary of the Irene Diamond Fund, Inc., from 1994 to 2002 and executive director of the Aaron Diamond Foundation from 1985 to 1996. Both organizations supported pioneering research in HIV/AIDS, some of it leading to the breakthrough development of antiviral drugs. McGee currently serves on several other boards, including The Sister Fund, The Baker Foundation, the Balm Foundation, the Gagarin Trust, the Overseers of Smolny College of the State University of St. Petersburg, the Advisory Committee of the Institute for International Liberal Education of Bard College, and the Rockefeller University Council.
