Sharing integrated solutions for HIV/AIDS and food insecurity

On June 21 through 26, PATH's Infant & Young Child Nutrition Project (IYCN) will participate in Project Concern International’s Africa Forum 2009 in Malawi. Forum participants will share their experiences in sustainable, community-based programs that integrate the issues of HIV/AIDS, food and nutrition security, and livelihoods. IYCN staff will lead a workshop and join a panel discussion on the intersection of HIV and feeding practices for infants and young children.
Helping HIV+ Mothers Make Good Infant Feeding Choices
On June 23, Dr. Hortense Angoran-Bénié, IYCN country coordinator for Côte d'Ivoire, will facilitate a skills-building workshop on the risks and benefits of breastfeeding versus formula feeding for HIV-positive mothers and their infants. Group activities will help participants understand AFASS criteria (acceptable, feasible, affordable, sustainable and safe) used to determine whether or not replacement feeding is a good option. Participants will discuss decision-making around infant feeding and role plays will be used to practice counseling skills.
Back to Basics: Optimizing Infant and Young Child Feeding in the Context of HIV/AIDS
On June 24, Makatleho Masoabi, IYCN country coordinator for Lesotho, will participate in this panel discussion on challenges and opportunities for strengthening basic infant and young child feeding practices. Ms. Masoabi will present her experience developing a multi-sectoral approach to improve infant feeding in Lesotho.
