Global Washington presents policy paper on global development
On July 6, experts from PATH, the Washington Global Health Alliance, and other member organizations of Global Washington participated in the launch of new recommendations for improving the effectiveness of US foreign assistance. The recommendations, contained in a policy paper entitled Global Development through Aid, Partnerships, Trade and Education: Recommendations from Global Washington, were requested by US Senators Maria Cantwell and Patty Murray and mark the first-ever regional perspective on global development policy. The paper will contribute to the Obama administration’s ongoing review of how current policy should change.
More than 400 people gathered at the launch event hosted by Seattle University to hear speeches by Senator Cantwell and Dr. Maura O’Neill, chief innovation officer at the US Agency for International Development, and listen to a panel discussion about the policy paper recommendations, ways to strengthen US foreign assistance, and examples of successful development partnerships in Washington State. The panel was moderated by Bill Clapp, founder and board president of Global Washington, and included panelists Scott Jackson, PATH’s vice president of External Relations; Steve Crane, president of Crane International Inc.; Dr. Stephen E. Hanson, vice provost of the Office of Global Affairs at University of Washington; and Jennifer Potter, president and CEO at Initiative for Global Development.
