With the launch of a program to improve the health of newborns, PATH has begun our first project in Myanmar, the Southeast Asian country also known as Burma.

PATH will begin work in three townships to complement the ongoing community health and development work of the Burnet Institute, a not-for-profit organization based in Australia that has been active in Myanmar since 2003.

In coming weeks, the Accelerated Vaccine Introduction initiative (AVI), in which PATH is a partner, will begin advocacy and communications activities leading toward the potential introduction of vaccines against rotavirus and human papillomavirus (HPV). Rotavirus is the most common cause of severe childhood diarrhea, while certain strains of HPV cause cervical cancer.

The PATH team also will be looking into possible introduction of Japanese encephalitis vaccine and Ultra Rice®, a technology that packs vitamins and minerals into manufactured grains made from rice flour. The grains are blended with traditional rice in a 1:100 ratio for fortification purposes.
